February Golfers of the Month

Michael Thompson

A pair of sophomores were named the Conference USA Golfers of the Month for February. Michael Thompson of Tulane earned the nod on the men’s side as he won his fourth career tournament title and recorded two top five finishes during the month. Camille Blackerby of TCU helped the Horned Frogs to a strong team performance at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Blackerby and the team each placed second at the tournament, beating out five Top 25 teams in the process.

Men’s Golfer of the Month
Michael Thompson – Tulane (Sophomore, Tucson, Ariz.)

The sophomore shot a four-under-par 68 to claim the fourth medallist honor of his career and his second tournament title of the 2004-05 season, winning the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Tulane Invitational. Thompson was the only golfer to finish the tournament under par, with a final round that included four birdeys and no bogeys. As a team, the Green Wave finished seventh overall at the invitational. Thompson placed fifth at the UCF/Rio Pinar Invitational earlier in the month, when he carded a 71-72-72=215 (-1). He has four top 10 finishes in seven tournaments this 2004-05 season. This is Thompson’s third conference honor as he was also named Golfer of the Month in March and September of 2004.

Women’s Golfer of the Month
Camille Blackerby – TCU (Sophomore, Breckenridge, Texas)

TCU moved up the college rankings this month as the Horned Frogs earned a second place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Invitational in San Juan. Blackerby finished second in the individual standings, shooting a five-over-par 75-72-74=221. The second round 72 is her season low. TCU finished behind a No. 3 Auburn team, and beat out teams from No. 5 Georgia, No. 17 Texas, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 21 USC and No. 22 Tulsa. The performance moved TCU up 16 spots in the national rankings to No. 33. Blackerby also tied for sixth place at the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial Invitational.
