ECU Wins Lady Pirate Classic With Record Third Round

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women’s golf team saved their best round for Tuesday as they shot a school-record 288 on the par 72, 6,093 yard Bradford Creek Golf Course, winning the Lady Pirate Spring Golf Classic. Sophomore Jessica Krasny (221) fired a third-round 68 today forcing a three-way playoff to determine the individual champion.

Krasny and fellow sophomore Ashley Leonard were tied with Laura Terebey of Radford after 56 holes. Krasny won the playoff hole and the individual title.

The Pirates fired a 903, including today’s school record 288 to win the overall 16-team championship. UNC Wilmington finished second at 908, followed by UNC Greensboro at 920.

Freshman Adrienne Millican finished sixth (225), sophomore Margaret Mitchell tied for 22nd (237), and sophomore Alyssa Hayes finished tied for 45th at 250 strokes.

Senior Kelly Noonan competed in the event as an individual performer. She recorded a 256 for the tournament.

“I am very, very proud of how we played today,” said Head Coach Kevin Williams. “Last week, I told the girls we were playing without focus and I think they prepared for this tournament better. Being at home was a big help for us because I think the girls were more relaxed.

“Shooting a 288 is huge for us. Just being a second-year program, a tournament like this really gives us a lot of confidence in ourselves. Jessica and Ashley played extremely well today. When our ‘big three’ get on a roll, I think we can compete with a lot of highly ranked teams.”

The Pirates will next travel to Athens, Ga., where they will compete in the Liz Murphy Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia on March 22-24.
