Tulane Women's Golf Finishes Second at Waterlefe/USF Invitational

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Tulane University women's golf team fired a team-best 299 in the third round to finish second at the Waterlefe/USF Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida Tuesday at Waterlefe Golf Club.

After finishing day one tied for third with rounds of 308 and 311, the Green Wave shaved nine points off its previous tournament best to break day-one's tie with C-USA foe South Florida and finished 16 strokes behind tournament champion Michigan State (293-301-308=902) and 16 strokes ahead of third-placed USF.

Junior Kathy Schafer led the way for the Green Wave, finishing tied for sixth with an eight-over par 224 (78-74-72). Sophomore Carolin Landmann was next for Tulane, finishing tied for 13th with a 13-over par 229 while freshman Lindsay Hulwick concluded the tournament tied for 17th with a plus-16 232. All three Green Wave golfers posted 80-or-higher scores in round two, but bounced back on Tuesday to tally scores of even par 72, two-under par 70 and four-over par 76, respectively.

Other Green Wave scorers were senior Marcela Gonzalez and freshman Alexis Wooster. Gonzalez finished the tournament tied for 34th (81-78-81=240), and Wooster finished tied for 43rd (84-76-83=243).

Michigan State's Emily Bastel won the individual title with a two-under par 214 (69-74-71), two strokes ahead of runner-up Federica Piovano of UCF (71- 70-75=216).

The Tulane golf team returns to action on March 28-29 when the Green Wave travels to the Lone Star State to participate in the Baylor Invitational where the team in Olive and Blue will go up against stiff competition against teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten.
