U of L Men's Golf Finishes Eighth at Johnny Owens Invitational

Senior Grant Sturgeon turned in his best event of the spring season to lead a balanced team effort as the Louisville men's golf team finished eighth at the 17th annual Johnny Owens Invitational hosted by Kentucky at the first ever collegiate golf event held at the University Club in Lexington.

U of L coach Mark Sturgeon has preached the importance of a balanced team effort and that's certainly what he got from his squad of four freshmen and a senior as the Cards finished eighth in the highly-competitive 18-team field of regional schools.

Picking up play midway through the second round which was halted due to inclement weather conditions on Friday, the Cards improved on their opening-round 301 with a second-round 294 and a final-round 289 to finish 27 strokes behind tournament champion Purdue which carded a five-over 54-hole score of 857.

Sturgeon seems to have found the form which saw him post a sizzling 72.00 stroke average during the fall season as he fired rounds of 71, 73 and 70 to finish tied for seventh with a one-over par 214, seven strokes off the pace set by medallist John Holmes of Purdue.

Brett Jones continued his consistent play as he topped an opening-round 75 with a second-round 71 and a final round 72 to finish tied for 21st with a five-over par 218. Fellow freshman Mark Anderson rebounded from an opening-round 78 with a 76 and a 73 to finish with a 14-over par 227 and tied for 59th-place with teammates Charlie Woo and Nick Ferrara.

After struggling through two events, Woo put together his second consistent outing as he fired rounds of 78, 75 and 74 while Ferrara notched an opening-round 77 followed by consecutive 75s.
