Marquette's Colson Wins Billiken Invitational
MADISON, Ill. - Freshman Nathan Colson (Plymouth, Wis.) survived a battle with Saint Louis freshman Evan Frederick to claim medalist honors at the 2002 Billiken Invitational in Madison, Ill. Colson scored a four-over, 217 to win by one stroke over Frederick.
Colson and Frederick were tied for second at the conclusion of 36 holes, one stroke off the leader, Dan Brown of Lindenwood. Through 12 holes, Colson was at three-over for the day and Frederick was three shots behind. With birdies on 15 and 18, Frederick was able to cut Colson's lead to one, but the MU freshman remained even over the final six holes for the victory.
Saint Louis did manage a team victory, thanks to the effort of Frederick. The Billikens shot a 40-over, 892, to win by 10 strokes over Wis.-Green Bay. marquette finished 12th in the 16 team event, shooting a 919.
Marquette's remaining four golfers tallied respectable totals. Junior Matt Hilton finished 29th, shooting a 229. Freshman Jason Gaare had a solid meet, carding a 232, finishing in 42nd. Junior Mike Everson tallied 242 to finish in 70th place and freshman Justin Christiansen logged a 251, placing 86th.
This meet concluded the Golden Eagles' regular season. MU travels to Navarre, Fla., to take part in the Conference USA Tournament, April 22-24.
