GREENVILLE, N.C. - Host East Carolina improved its lead by six strokes to hold onto the top spot and win the 2006 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship, which concluded today at the par 72, 6,221-yard Ironwood Country Club. The Pirates were led to their first C-USA women's golf title by freshman Lene Krog, who finished the three-round tournament with an even 216 (74-72-70) to earn medalist honors.

"I knew we had the potential to win today," ECU head coach Kim Lewellen said. "We put ourselves in a position to win. We made some tough shots down the stretch and I'm so proud of the way we competed."

Krog, who was also named the 2006 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, carded a two-under par 70 in today's final round to beat SMU junior Jennifer Ackerson by one stroke (75-68-74=217). Ackerson and the Mustangs, led by 2006 C-USA Coach of the Year Todd Selders, placed second overall with a team score of 897.

Memphis junior Stacey Tate, the 2006 C-USA Women's Golfer of the Year, finished third (74-72-73=219), while UTEP's Jullianne Kim (73-76-71=220) and Tulsa's Cas Bridge (72-72-76=220) tied for fourth place to round out the All-Championship Team.

Tulsa and UCF tied for third place in the team standings. Bridge and All-Conference USA First Team selection Michaela Cavener (sixth place) led the Golden Hurricane with the pair of Top 10 finishes. All five UCF golfers placed among the Top 20, led by senior Ashley Grier in seventh place.
