TCU Extends Its Lead at C-USA Men’s Golf Championship

Colby Beckstrom

Led by a pair of second round scores of 69 by Drew Stoltz and David Schultz, three-time defending champion TCU has extended its lead at the 2005 Conference USA Men’s Golf Championships to a commanding 19 strokes with a two-day team total of 560. The performances of Stoltz and Schultz, along with the two-day effort of Horned Frog Colby Beckstrom, the tournament’s individual leader at –6 under par, have TCU far ahead of second place Charlotte. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,093-yard Grand Bear Golf Club in Gulfport, Miss.

After Beckstrom and Stoltz (-5 under for the tournament), UAB’s Garrett Osborn has moved into a tie for third with East Carolina’s Robin Smith, the day one leader that struggled with a two-over, 74 on Tuesday. Osborn and Smith are each at –4 under with 18 holes to play. Shultz is knotted with Charlotte’s Clint Deibert with a two-day total of 141, -3 under par.

Louisville’s Derek Fathauer had the top score on day two, firing a –4 under, 68 to move alone into seventh place with a two-day total of 142. Rounding out the top 10 are Tulane’s Michael Thompson (-1 under, 143) and Matt Mincer of Charlotte and James Sacheck of TCU (both at an even par, 144).

Trailing TCU in the team standings is Charlotte. The 49ers team score of 290 on day two was just one more stroke than it had on the opening day and Charlotte (579) holds a three-stroke lead over third place UAB (582), which fell from second place on Monday. Tulane is in fourth place with a two-day total of 583, while Houston remains in fifth with a 589.

Louisville (594), Memphis (601), Southern Miss (601), East Carolina (605), and Marquette (610), respectively, hold down spots 6-10 in the tourney, while Cincinnati (616), USF (616), DePaul (622) and Saint Louis (638) stand in spots 11-14.

The final round of play begins at 7:45 a.m. CST on Wednesday.
