Hannan Resigns as Charlotte Head Men's Golf Coach

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte 49ers head men's golf coach Ben Hannan has resigned to accept the head coaching position at his alma mater, South Alabama, effective May 31, 2003.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the growth of the 49ers program for the past three years," said Hannan, who served as 49ers coach from Spring, 2000 to present. "As hard a decision as this was, it is a great opportunity for me and my family and I am excited to get back to my alma mater. I will keep a close eye on the 49ers and their successes and I wish them all the best."

In Hannan's three years, he has seen two players, Jeff Curl and Mike Hyland, qualify for the U.S. Junior Nationals and coached 2001 all-Conference USA choice Mike Shamp, who placed fourth at the 2001 Conference USA Championships and 2003 Conference USA medalist Russell Killough, a freshman who won the individual title at this year's league championships by three strokes.

"We appreciate Ben's leadership the past three years," said 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose. "His focus on recruiting outstanding golfers has laid the foundation for a competitive golf program at Charlotte. We wish him well."

A search for Hannan's successor will begin immediately.
