Jones Posts U of L Record Stroke Average
|
The final number was just a formality for Brett Jones who capped off a memorable regular season with a 14th-place individual finish and the University of Louisville record for single season stroke average while leading the Cards to a 10th-place finish at the highly-competitive Atlanta Intercollegiate.
Jones entered the final tuneup of the regular season before the NCAA Men's Division I Golf Championships nearly a full stroke under the school record for single season stroke average of 73.7 set by former teammate Grant Sturgeon last year. Jones put all of the drama aside on Thursday with rounds of 68 and 69 to race into fourth place at the end of play on the first day. The 2002 Conference USA Freshman of the Year cruised into 14th-place on Friday at an event featuring seven of the top-30 ranked teams in the nation and three of the top five players in the nation with a final-round 76.
Notching his 10th top-20 finish of the season, Jones locked up the U of L record for single season stroke average, finishing his sophomore campaign with a stunning 72.5 average in 13 events, 1.2 strokes under the previous record.
As a team, the Cards pulled into 10th-place on Friday with a final round 298. Sophomore Charlie Woo finished tied for 28th with a three-round 220 (79-67-74) while freshmen Will Hanna (77-81-71), Matthew Britt (80-78-77), and Tim Powell (74-82-81) finished tied for 52nd, 57th and 58th, respectively.
