Full Release (pdf.)
TCU, the 2004 Conference USA Men’s Golf Champion, and UAB are among the 81-team field selected to participate in this year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Regionals, May 20-22, it was announced by the NCAA Division I Selection Committee on Monday. Additionally, Houston’s Zach Mowbray was one of six individuals invited to participate in the Central Region. This is the fourth time in eight years that C-USA has had multiple teams receive bids to regional tournaments. The league has had at least one team qualify for NCAA play since 1997.
The Horned Frogs, currently ranked 10th nationally, will compete in the Central Regional hosted by Purdue University at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind., while the Blazers will travel to New Haven, Conn., for the East Regional hosted by Yale University at the Yale Golf Course. The top 10 squads and the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams from each of the three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships hosted by Virginia Tech, which will be held June 1-4 at The Homestead's Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va.
This is the Horned Frogs 15th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance under head coach Bill Montigel, the 2004 C-USA Coach of the Year. TCU, the No. 3 seed in the Central Region, has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in school history, including nine of the past 13 seasons. In 2002, the Horned Frogs’ last trip to the tourney, TCU finished tied for 11th. J.J. Killeen is the only member of that Horned Frog team remaining that advanced to the 2002 national championship.
TCU captured its third consecutive conference crown April 19-21 at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. Adam Meyer, this season’s C-USA Player of the Year, helped the Horned Frogs to the C-USA team championship by leading the individual competition wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors. TCU’s squad also features all-conference selections Colby Beckstrom and Killeen and all-tournament pick David Schultz.
The last time UAB, the 15th seed in this year’s East Region, earned a regional qualifying bid was in 2002. That season, the Blazers finished tied for ninth at the NCAA East Regional in Roswell, Ga., and advanced to the NCAA Championship in Columbus, Ohio, where the Blazers placed 27th out of the top 30 teams in the nation.
UAB finished fourth at this year’s Conference USA Championship. Clark Brown captured all-tournament honors at this year’s C-USA Championship by finishing tied for fourth with a two-over par 218. The Blazers will also count on strong play from all-conference selections, Chris Cousins and Tigh Van Leewuwen, in regional action.
Houston’s Mowbray is the second straight Cougar to participate in NCAA Regional play. Last year, Brett Callas advanced to the national championship after capturing the Central Region Tournament. Mowbray was UH’s top finisher at this year’s C-USA Tournament, posting a three-over par 219, tying him for seventh place.
Four future members of Conference USA also received bids to the NCAA Regionals. WAC Champion SMU and Tulsa will compete in the Central Regional, while Atlantic Sun Champion UCF and UTEP will participate in the West Regional in Sun River, Oregon.
Live scoring updates for regional action will be available at www.golfstat.com.
