After posting a 12-over-par score of 300 in the second round, the eighth-ranked TCU men's golf team finds itself in 13th place among 27 teams with one round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Colbert Hills Golf Course remaining.
Just one team was able to break par on a rainy, windy day in Manhattan, Kan. TCU is 17 strokes behind team leader Illinois and, more importantly, is three strokes behind 10th-place Minnesota. The top 10 teams and two individuals who are not members of a qualifying team at each of the three regional sites will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Championship from May 27-30 at Oklahoma State's Karsten Creek Course in Stillwater, Okla.
J.J. Killeen, in a share of 40th place overall, leads the Horned Frogs. He posted an even-par 72 on Friday thanks to birdies on three of the final four holes. Killeen, a sophomore, now has a 146 (+2) through 36 holes.
Tied for 59th place are TCU's Adam Rubinson and Adam Meyer with two-round scores of 148 (+4). Meyer posted a three-over 75 on day two, while Rubinson carded a 77.
Fellow sophomore David Schultz has a share 104th place with an eight-over-par score after his second straight round of 76. After recording a team-best 69 in the first round, freshman Colby Beckstrom struggled on the second day, shooting an 86. He now sits in a tie for 118th place.
Houston's Brett Callas, competing as an individual, moved from a tie at 30th after the first day to a tie for fourth at four-under par after firing a three-under 69 in the second round to go with his opening round one-under 71. Louisville's Brett Jones slipped in the second round, carding a five-over par 77. Jones is tied for 104th at eight-over par. The top two individual in each of the three regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships.
TCU placed 11th at last year's NCAA Championships. The Horned Frogs are in search of their 13th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championships and their 10th under head coach Bill Montigel.
Live scoring of Saturday's final round will be available on www.golfstat.com. TCU, paired with Oklahoma and North Texas, will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 8:42 a.m. (CT).
