The UAB men’s golf team is tied for eighth place after one round of play at the NCAA Men’s Golf East Regional in New Haven, Conn., while 10th-ranked TCU is tied for 13th at the Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind. The Blazers recorded team total of 14-over par 294 at The Course at Yale, a par-70 layout. As a squad, the Horned Frogs carded a 17-over par 305 at the par-72 Birck Boilmaker Golf Complex’s Kampen Course.

Ryan Thomas was UAB’s top performer on Thursday, firing an even-par 70. Thomas shot a four-over par 38 on his first nine holes, but made strong comeback on the back nine with five birdies, including three straight to close out the round. Three strokes behind Thomas was Tigh Van Leeuwen, who shot an opening 73 and is currently tied for 29th in the individual standings.

Leading the Horned Frogs is David Schultz, who notched a one-under par 71, tying him for sixth place in the Central Region individual standings. On the day, Schultz had three birdies. The only blemishes in his round came at the ninth and 12th holes, where he recorded bogeys. His teammate, J.J. Killeen is tied for 17th after posting a 73 on the first day. Killeen was even par through the first nine holes, including a birdie on the fourth hole. However, on the back nine, he would post bogeys on 11 and 18 to finish one over on the day.

Houston’s Zach Mowbray, competing as an individual in the Central Region, also posted a first round one-over par 73 (t-17th). After carding a double bogey on No.2 and a bogey on No. 3, Mowbray recovered with birdies on at No. 4 and No. 9. He got back to one-under par with a birdie at the 10th hole, but dropped back to even with a bogey at No. 12. After making par on 13, Mowbray notched another birdie at the 14th to drop back to one-under before suffering a bogey on 16. He would go on to close out his round with pars at 17 and 18.

Top-ranked Florida is in first place in the East Region with a six-over par 286 after the first round, while No. 8 Oklahoma State is the team leader in the Central Region with a one-under par 287 after the opening round. Kenneth Fahey of Rhode Island and Bill Haas of Wake Forest are tied for first place in the East at three-under par 67, while Jason Hartwick of Texas and Andrew Parr of Texas A&M are the Central Region co-leaders at three-under par 69.
