TCU's Montigel Honored as Horned Frog Coach of the Year by DASA

DALLAS, Texas - TCU head men’s golf coach Bill Montigel has been named the 2002-03 TCU Coach of the Year by the Dallas All Sports Association (DASA), it was announced today. Montigel, a four-time conference coach of the year and five-time league champion, recently completed his 16th season at the helm of the men’s golf program. As a result of his committed efforts, TCU has been a mainstay among the nation’s Top 25 in the year-end national polls for more than a decade.

“This is quite an honor,” Montigel said. “I am truly honored to have been selected to receive this award because the TCU Athletics Department is privileged with so many great coaches and top-notch programs. This award really belongs to the TCU golf team and all of our supporters. Without the dedication and support that we receive from TCU and the Fort Worth community, our success would not be possible.”

Under Montigel, the Frogs have qualified for NCAA Regional play every year since 1990, and have advanced to the NCAA Championships nine times in the last 13 seasons. The TCU golf program, which dates back to the early 1900s, has six conference championships in its history, five of which have come in the last seven years. Montigel also has taken TCU to nine of the school’s 12 all-time NCAA Championships appearances.

During the 2002-03 season, Montigel’s Horned Frogs moved into the nation’s Top 10 after beginning the season unranked. TCU tied a school record by winning three team titles during the campaign, claiming the Sooner Invitational in September, the Prestige at PGA West in November and the Conference USA Championships in April.

The Conference USA crown was TCU’s third straight league title, and Montigel was named C-USA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. In May, TCU earned the second seed in the NCAA Central Regional, which marked the 14th straight regional appearance for the Horned Frogs.

Montigel, the longest-tenured coach at the school, currently serves as the chair of the TCU Head Coaches Committee, a position he was elected to in the fall of 2001, and is on the NCAA District VI Selection Committee. He also is a member of the United States Golf Association and the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Previously, he has served as Chairman of the District VI Selection Committee and has been on the NCAA Men’s Golf Committee. In 2002, Montigel was voted into the Horned Frog Classic Hall of Honor.

Montigel and his wife, Margaret, have two children, Kelli and Thomas.

The coach of the year award will be presented at the Dallas All Sports Association’s annual awards banquet on June 23. For the past 38 years, the DASA has recognized outstanding high school, college and professional athletes and coaches for their achievement in sports. Proceeds from the event are returned to the community in the form of scholarships and other sports-related funding to deserving area youth.
