TCU Men’s Golf Team Advances To NCAA Championship

    The TCU men’s golf team fired a final round 11-over par 299 at the Central Regional on Saturday to earn a berth in the 2004 NCAA Championship. All five Horned Frog golfers shot rounds of 77 or better at the Birck Boilmaker Kampen Course to help TCU to its 13th appearance in the national championship tournament and its 10th trip in the last 14 seasons.

    Meanwhile at the East Regional at The Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn., UAB finished 21st with a final round 313 (+33) for a three-day total of 910 (+70).

    J.J. Killeen finished the weekend as TCU’s top golfer, tying for 12th at six-over par 222. In the final round, he carded a 76, his highest score of the three days. For Killeen it was his third straight top-20 performance. Adam Meyer, this season’s Conference USA Player of the Year, posted the best round of the day for the Horned Frogs with a one-over par 73 to finish tied for 53rd at 231 (+15) for the event. David Schultz also tallied a 76 in the final round to finish 26th at 225 (+9). Colby Beckstrom notched a 74 on the last day, while Stephen Polanski had a 77. Beckstrom earned a share of 27th place on the final leader board with a 226 (+10), while Polanski complete the event tied for 84th with a 236 (+20).

    UAB’s Ryan Thomas, who opened with rounds of 70 and 71, shot a nine-over par 79 in the final round to finish tied for 41st with a 220 (+10). Tigh Van Leeuwen had the low round of the day for the Blazers with a 75 and finished the tournament in a tie for 74th with a 226 (+16). Nathan Turner posted an 80 on the final day for a three-round total of 234 (+24, T-111th), while Chris Cousins and Clark Brown had scores of 79 and 80, respectively, in the last round. Cousins tied for 117th with a 236 (+26), while Brown was 127th with a total of 238 (+28).

    Houston’s Zach Mowbray concluded his season at the Central Regional with a final-round 79, seven over on the day. He finished the three-day event with a total of 233 (+17). Mowbray’s appearance in the regional marked the 16th season that a Cougar golfer or teams has competed in the NCAA postseason.

    This year’s championship tournament will be contested at The Homestead’s Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va., June 1-4. This will be TCU’s first appearance in the national championship since 2002 and its second as a Conference USA member.
