Stillwater, Okla. --- Houston’s Brett Callas finished day one of the 2003 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship with seven-over par 79 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club (par-72, 7,095-yard) in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University is serving as the host for the four-day event.

After finishing the front nine with an even-par 36, Callas had his opening-round efforts hampered by back-to-back eights on the 16th and 17th holes. Going into that two-hole stretch, Callas had was level on the day with a 59. He concluded the round with a birdie on the par-5 18th. He is currently tied for 87th in the tournament field.

Callas qualified for the championship by winning Central Region Medalist honors at the Colbert Hills Golf Club in Manhattan, Kansas (May 15-17), where he carded a three-day total of nine-under 207, including a final-round 67. With that 67, Callas set a UH record for lowest score in the final round of an NCAA Regional, eclipsing the 68’s posted by Zoran Zorkic (1989 Central Regional) and Wade Ormsby (2000 Central Regional) in their respective events.

Auburn’s Lee Williams is the individual leader with a three-under 69 in the first round on Tuesday. Host Oklahoma State is the team leader after one day with 11-over par 299.

Callas will tee off for round two on Wednesday morning at 8:48 a.m.
