Tulane's Hulwick Qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur
BOULDER, Colo. - Tulane sophomore-to-be Lindsay Hulwick shot a two-under par 69 Tuesday at the Boulder Country Club to earn co-medalist honors and qualify for the 2002 United States Women's Amateur Championship. Hulwick is just the third Tulane woman ever to qualify for the nation's most prestigious amateur event. The U.S. Women's Amateur will be held August 12-17 at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y.
Hulwick, a native of Littleton, Colo., played the front nine in two-over par 37 on the par 71 Boulder CC course before coming in with a sizzling four-under par 32 on the back. She birdied the 10th, 11th and 12th holes on the back nine after sinking a critical birdie putt on number 10.
"The turning point was when I made a 12-foot birdie putt on 10," Hulwick said. "My putting was a lot better on the back nine and I made a lot of crucial birdie putts."
Hulwick was one of five players from the Colorado sectional to qualify for the U.S. Championship as she tied for the lowest score of the day in Boulder.
"I am really excited," Hulwick said. "I haven't played in a lot of tournaments this summer, but I have been practicing a lot, especially in the last couple of weeks. I felt ready for it and I hit the ball really well. I really played well on the back nine."
Hulwick, who was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2002, helped Tulane to its best NCAA finish ever as the Green Wave qualified for its second NCAA Regional appearance ever and missed a spot in the NCAA Championships by two strokes. She played in all 11 tournaments for Coach Sue Bower with her best finish a tie for sixth at the Green Wave Women's Golf Classic.
The United State Women's Amateur Championship consists of two days of qualifying after which the field will be trimmed to 64. At that point, match play begins and continues until the U.S. Women's Amateur Champion is crowned. The tournament will be held August 12 through 17. Previously, Green Wave players Christy Carter (1997) and Pam Buff (1999) have played in the Amateur.
"I'm looking forward to the experience, and to playing with the best players in the country there," Hulwick said.
