Charlotte 49ers sophomore Matt Mincer has been named GolfWorld's National Player of the Week, for the week ending Nov. 7. Mincer captured medalist honors at the 49ers Collegiate Classic at Skybrook Golf Club with a record-breaking three-round total of -14, 202 (66-70-66), to lead Charlotte to the tournament title.
Mincer broke his own school record by five strokes and bested tournament runner-up Ted Gray of Marquette by seven strokes. The 49ers took top team honors, as well, shooting a three-round total of 10-under par, 854, to edge runner-up UNC Greensboro by one stroke.
Mincer, who set school records for tournament scoring (-9, 207) and season stroke average (72.5), last year, blistered his tournament mark by posting a pair of rounds of 66, which match his personal best round. In particular, Mincer fired a six-under-par 66 in the third and final round to help Charlotte rally from third place to the title. Along the way, he lowered his stroke average for the fall to 72.7, within striking distance of that school record.
A first-team all-Conference USA selection as a freshman, last year, Mincer placed third at last spring's 2004 C-USA Championships to earn C-USA all-tournament honors, as well. In addition to his broken records and all-conference honors, Mincer was named C-USA Golfer of the Month in October of 2003.
