Sanders Ties For Ninth At Savage College All-America Golf Classic
EL PASO, TX -- University of Houston senior Andy Sanders tied for ninth
place among a prestigious field of 16 golfers after the final round at the
Savane College All-America Golf Classic Tuesday in El Paso, Texas. Sanders
was one-under par (212) for the 54-hole tournament at the El Paso Country
Club and 16 shots behind tournament champion Ricky Barnes, a sophomore at
Arizona who fired a 17-under par 196.
Barnes' score set a new tournament record (old record was 12-under par,
201) for an annual event that features the top 16 collegiate players in the
nation. The previous tournament record was set by Jay Don Blake (Utah State,
1980) and Jeremy Anderson (UNLV, 1998). Past winners of the Savane Golf
Classic include Jerry Pate (1974), Davis Love, III (1984), David Duval
(1991), Notah Begay (1994) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Sanders currently leads the nationally-ranked Cougars in scoring average
(71.2). He is the back-to-back individual champion of Conference USA who
competed at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach over the summer.
The par-71 course has a length of 6,781 yards, a slope of 133 and a
