Men's Tennis Falls To Louisville In First Round of NCAA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU/NCAA) - The Mustangs headed to Kentucky knowing that they had a tough road ahead of them. SMU's first match-up was slated against host team, #27 Louisville. The Mustangs faced grueling conditions as three hours into the match, it was delayed due to rain. Almost six hours after the match began, SMU was unable to overturn the Big East Conference Champions as the Cardinals won, 4-0. The Mustangs concluded the season with a 17-10 overall record. In doubles, the Mustangs were unable to put away the doubles point as it came down to a tiebreaker at the top position. The No. 2 Cardinal pair of Jhonny Berrido and Damar Johnson defeated Oivind Alver and Peter Oredsson, 8-5, while shortly after, the Mustangs evened the playing field as Federico Murgier and Henrik Soderberg downed Slavko Radman and Tony Teufel at No. 3, 8-6. With those matches concluded, it came down to the No. 1 singles as the score was knotted at 6-6. The score continued to flip-flop as the Mustang duo of Alex Skrypko and David Kuczer continually broke the tie, but the Cardinal #26 tandem of Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustaffson fought back winning the match and the doubles point, 9-8 (7-3). In singles action, #58 Oredsson faced a challenge against Gustaffson at No. 2 has he fell in straight sets and Kuczer was unable to overcome Clark at No. 4. Alver battled with Nicolas Houard at No. 6, forcing a tiebreaker in the second set but was unable to overtake the Cardinal player.
#55 Skrypko cruised to a first set win over #39 Radman at No. 1 singles, but Radman, the Big East Singles player of the conference championship, rallied for a second set win. The third set was tied at 3-3 when the match was called. Murgier put away the first set at No. 3 against Johnson and Johnson won the second set. The score was knotted at 4-4 as that match was called.
