May 25, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - The University of Tulsa's seventh-ranked Arnau Brugues tallied a 6-3, 6-4 win over Fresno State's 49th-ranked Jakub Cech in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, California. Brugues will take on Stanford's 25th-ranked KC Corkery in the Sweet 16. Match time has not yet been announced. With Brugues' win today, he gained All-America status, the first men's tennis singles player at TU to claim such honors. The Golden Hurricane doubles duo of Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor were the last to reach the Sweet 16 for Tulsa, as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2003 NCAA Doubles Championship. Brugues, who has tallied a 19-2 mark this year, including an 11-1 record against ranked opponents, registered a victory in the first game and led throughout the first set, winning 6-3. In the second set, he again captured a victory in the first game, but then dropped three games in a row to trail 1-3. Brugues fought back, letting Cech win only one of the final six games to claim the victory, 6-4. Follow tomorrow's Sweet 16 action on "Live Video and Scoreboard" at www.GoStanford.com.
