No. 35 UAB Falls to Central Florida and Troy State in Florida State Tennis Invitational
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The 35th-ranked UAB men's tennis team travelled to
Tallahassee, Fla. Feb 16-17 to compete in the Florida State Spring
Invitational. UAB was upset by Central Florida 4-3 in first round play
and then again in the first round of consolation play 4-2 against Troy
State.
In first round play, University of Central Florida pulled off the upset
over UAB winning 4-3. UAB started the match by taking the doubles
point, winning two of three doubles matches. At no. 2 doubles, Alex
Jung and Andre van der Merwe of UAB defeated the tandem of Gabriel
Strangberg and Ryan Winter 8-3 while Tom Dalby and Sanzaruz Zaman of
UAB defeated Catalin Bradu and Augusto Sanabria 9-7 at no. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Dalby, who played at the no. 3 position and Alan
Ambrose, who played at the no. 4 position, both defeated their opponents
to take two singles points. It would prove to be one point shy of the
win.
As UAB moved into the consolation round of play, they took on Troy State
who was defeated by FAMU in the first round of tournament play. UAB was
again upset 4-2 after Troy State took the doubles point and then won
four of the six singles matches.
UAB heads next to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on the 49th-ranked Crimson
Tide on Saturday, Feb. 24. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
