UAB Women's Tennis Shut Out Florida Atlantic
ORLANDO, Fla. - UABs 75th-ranked womens tennis team won its
sixth-straight match with its third-straight shut out performance Sunday
as the Blazers defeated Florida Atlantic 7-0. UAB was coming off
shut-out performances over Louisville and Jacksonville State.
With the win, UAB improved to 6-0 on the 2001 season and 2-0 in C-USA.
This marked the first time the two teams have met.
UAB gained the opening point of the match by sweeping doubles play with
8-4 , 8-5 , and 8-2 wins at the three respective positions. The
29th-ranked doubles team of Mirela Vladulescu and Monika Schmid improved
their season record to 6-0 as they defeted Maria Aguirre-Gomez and Tania
Rivera of FAU 8-4 at no. 1 doubles.
UAB would be equally as strong in singles, winning all six singles
matches in straight sets.
UABs Vladulescu, ranked 17th nationally, defeated 64th-ranked Kristen
Jordon 6-0, 6-2 at no. 1 singles improving her record to 6-0 on the
season. Also imporving their records to 6-0 this season with victories
in todays match were Schmid and Margaux Melsheimer at the no. 2 and no.
3 positions. Schmid defeated Gabriela Spear 6-2, 6-1, while Melsheimers
match was retired after winning the first set 7-6.
UAB will continue its season on Friday, Feb. 23 as they travel to
Auburn, Ala. to take on the War Eagles. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
