Memphis' MONICA GONZALEZ-GORDO and UAB's ALEX JUNG are the Conference USA Tennis Players of the Week for the period ending March 24.
Women - Monica Gonzalez-Gordo, Memphis Junior, Barcelona, Spain Memphis' MONICA GONZALEZ-GORDO is the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending March 24. Gonzalez-Gordo was 2-0 defeating Jennifer Sibille of Southern Miss, 6-1, 6-0 and Fernanda Kompatscher of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-0, 6-0. Her singles record this spring is now 7-1. In doubles, she teamed with junior SABRINA LINDEMANN to go 3-0 with wins over Catherina Alain and Bettina Rettenmaier of North Texas (8-2), Shawny Price and Jennifer Sibille of Southern Miss (8-1) and Vinca Rampen and Robin Singh of Louisiana-Lafayette (8-2). Gonzalez-Gordo and Lindemann are now 11-1 in doubles this spring with all of their matches played at No. 1. For the week combined, Gonzalez-Gordo was 5-0, lost only one game in singles and only five games in doubles. She has lost only two sets all season splitting time between No. 1 and No. 2 singles and both of those sets were in her only loss of the season, March 1.
Men - Alex Jung, UAB Senior, Waldaschaff, Germany UAB's ALEX JUNG is the Conference USA Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending March 24. Playing in the No. 2 and No. 4 singles spot, Jung won both of his matches. In the No. 2 spot, Jung took a 6-3, 6-0 straight set win over Jacksonvillle State's Arthro Neito to lead the No. 46 Blazers to a 7-0 victory over the in-state rival. In UAB's March 24 match against No. 37 Vanderbilt, Jung garnered the only point for the Blazers, winning in straight sets again. The Waldaschaff, Germany native downed VU's Scott Brown 6-3, 6-4 in UAB's 6-1 loss to the Commodores.
In doubles, the senior, teamed up with freshman Tobi Klein to form the No. 35 tandem team in the country. Jung and Klein have won their last three matches and have combined for a 9-3 dual match record so far this season. The duo defeated Lewis Smith and Bobby Reynolds of Vanderbilt at the No. 1 doubles spot. On March 19 against Jacksonville State, Jung teamed up with JEAN-PIERRE DE LANGE to knock off Rafeal Rodriguez and Nick Utley 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
