Marquette Women's Tennis Defeats Tulane

Genevieve Charron

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - - Marquette claimed the opening doubles point then posted wins at three singles spots to record a narrow 4-3 win over the Tulane women's tennis team at the Helfaer Tennis and Recreation Center on Monday.

The loss was Tulane's second straight, dropping the Green Wave to 9-6 overall. The Wave had entered the match ranked 56th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Marquette improved to 3-12 overall, snapping a three-match losing streak in the process.

"Marquette took advantage of their home-court advantage today," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "They just came out and played better than we did."

The Golden Eagles won the doubles portion of the match to take a 1-0 lead in the team score. Gen Charron and Anna Pavlovic posted an 8-6 win over the Tulane team of Maria Ivanov and Joyce Bergman at the No. 1 spot, while Vero Briseno and Belle Espinosa recorded an 8-5 win over Julie Morris and Ana Saaibi at the No. 2 position. Tulane's lone win in doubles came on court 3, when Anneli Axsater and Lucy Wood posted an 8-6 win over the Marquette team of Eva Herrera and Alex Stankovic.

Four of the six singles matches went to three sets, but Marquette claimed wins in three of those contests to take the dual match victory. Tulane won a pair of straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Freshman Maria Ivanov continued her strong play with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Gen Charron at the No. 1 spot, while classmate Ana Saaibi was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Vero Briseno on court 4. Tulane's only other win came at No. 6 singles when Lucy Wood posted a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory over Stankovic.

Marquette answered with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No, 5 singles. Espinosa was a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Julie Morris on court 2, while Herrera recorded a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over Bergman at the No. 3 spot. Pavlovic turned in a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over Maiko Cook on court 5.

Tulane returns to action on Friday, as the Green Wave travel to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama.
