UAB Men's Tennis Drops Two Matches To Top Fifteen Teams
MOBILE, Ala. -- After almost a month with no scheduled matches, the UAB
men's tennis team hit the courts in Mobile, Ala. for two matches against
13th-ranked Miami and 10th-ranked South Alabama. The Blazers dropped
both matches to its ranked opponents, falling 5-2 to the Hurricanes and
6-1 to the Jaguars. The Blazers are now 5-9 in dual-match play.
In Saturday's match against Miami, the Hurricanes jumped out early
winning all three doubles matches. Miami's 45th-ranked doubles team of
Peter Hoffman and Tomas Smid defeated Tom Dalby and Rusty Walker at no.
1 doubles.
In singles action, Dalby defeated Smid 7-6(4), 6-4 at the no. 2 spot and
Alex Jung defeated Johan Lindqvist 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the no. 3 spot to
take the only two points for the Blazers in the match.
On Sunday, the Blazers faced 10th-ranked South Alabama. The match
opened with South Alabama sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0
lead.
In singles play, UAB got their only point of the match from Andre van
der Merwe as he upset no. 49 Julien Raynal in three sets, 6-2, 4-6,
7-5. The loss was Raynal's first on the season.
The Blazers will play their last regular season match next Sunday, April
15 against 26th-ranked Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
