USF Women Lose 7-0 At Number 46 New Mexico
The University of New Mexico women's tennis team won four singles matches
in the third set and seniors Natalia Alekhova and Nicoleta Spilca earned
victories
in their last home match as the Lobos defeated the University of South
Florida 7-0
on Sunday afternoon at the Lobo Tennis Club.
USF is now 4-14, while UNM (13-6) ran its unbeaten streak to six matches and
the Lobos have
now won 10 of their last 12.
The Bulls had won a 6-1 match played Saturday in Albuquerque against Hawaii,
snapping an
eight-match losing streak.
Alekhova and Spilca both had to work to win the final match on their home
court. Alekhova beat USF¹s Tina Harrison 7-5 in the third set and Spilca
put away the Bulls¹ Ashlee Callahan 6-0 in the third.
Along with the two seniors, four Lobo freshmen earned singles wins against
the Bulls. Sandy Lukowski earned her sixth straight win, beating USF¹s
Jennifer Sinclair 6-4 in the third at No. 2 singles; Tjasa Suvak won 6-4,
6-2 at No. 3 singles; Lindsey Marvel continued her roll at the No. 4
position, winning her seventh straight match and 10th win in her last 12
opportunities; and Maria Ruiz-Fabrega won 6-2 in the third at No. 6
singles.
