Memphis Men's Tennis Sweeps Western Kentucky on Senior Day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men’s tennis team (13-8, 2-1 C-USA) swept Western Kentucky in their regular season finale at home, Saturday. With the win, No. 67 Memphis finishes with a 7-1 record at home after falling to UALR, 4-2, in a match that was forced inside, Wednesday.

The Tigers handily took the doubles point, sweeping the three doubles matches. Freshman Alex Jago then made it 2-0 Memphis with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, and senior Joe Schmulian stretched his winning streak to nine straight singles matches with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles to put Memphis up 3-0. The win capped Schmulian’s Tiger home career. Sophomore Andrew Olswing (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway), playing his first dual match in the top six this season, secured the Memphis victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

Senior Ben Stapp capped his Tiger home career with a come-back win at No. 2 singles. Stapp came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to force a tiebreak, but fell 7-6. The senior bounced back and won the second set 6-4, and claimed the super-tiebreak, 10-3, to close his home career.

The Tigers will leave Monday to travel to Milwaukee to get ready for the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championships, hosted by Marquette University. The tournament seedings will be announced Monday morning.
