TCU Upsets No. 21 Arkansas in Men's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas -- After registering only one point in their previous three matches, the 27th-ranked Horned Frog men's tennis team (10-9) snapped its three-match skid at home Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 upset over No. 21 Arkansas (12-7) on the Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. With the win, the Frogs improved to 2-0 this season against teams from the Southeastern Conference.
TCU got things started by winning the doubles point for the first time in ten matches. Freshman Chris Brandi and junior Toni Gordon picked up the first win by an 8-6 score at three over Kristofer Ivarsson and Tiago Azevedo. Minutes later, TCU clinched the point with freshmen Daniel Scholten and Fabrizio Sestini's 8-6 victory over Eduardo Pacheco and Magnus Kullenberg at the two spot.
The Frogs' victories in doubles set the tone for the singles action as they claimed three through six singles, all in straight sets. The match was clinched at five singles by Scholten, who defeated Azevedo 6-3, 6-4 for his 16th win this spring. The Wesel, Germany-native currently leads the team in dual match victories with an 11-6 mark.
The Razorbacks two victories came at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. At one, 32nd-ranked Oggie Kolev won a battle with No. 42 Gordon 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Kullenberg defeated No. 86 Sestini 7-6, 6-4 for the Hogs' other victory.
"I thought we did a great job preparing for this match today," said TCU head coach Joey Rivé. "We played some great doubles, which will be key for us heading in to the Conference USA tournament next week."
TCU is 6-0 this season when it wins the doubles point, but only 4-9 when losing it. The Horned Frogs have now won 31 consecutive matches when winning the doubles. The last time TCU won the doubles, but lost the match was against Duke on March 25, 2000 in a 5-2 loss in Durham, N.C.
The Frogs will now head to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Conference USA Championship taking place on April 18-21. Seeding for the tournament with be announced by the conference office tomorrow, April 15.
