Men - Joe Schmulian, Memphis Senior, Devon, South Africa Schmulian was named the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week for the period ending April 14. He enters the 2003 C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship riding a nine-match winning streak, including a 3-0 mark last week. Against Arkansas-Little Rock’s Juan Carlos Baca last Wednesday, he posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 road victory over Tennessee-Martin’s Gustavo Anzola on Friday. This past Saturday, Schmulian won his final home match as a Tiger with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Western Kentucky’s Stanislaus Rabinovics. After missing the fall season with an injury, Schmulian is 14-6 this spring. As a team, Memphis finished the week with a 2-1 mark. The Tigers (13-8, 2-1 C-USA) are the No. 5 seed in men’s tennis championship which begin on Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Toni Gordon, TCU Senior, Barcelona, Spain Gordon was named the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week for the period ending April 14. An unranked Gordon helped TCU (13-7, 3-0 C-USA) post a 6-1 defeat of local-rival SMU for the second time this season by upsetting Johan Brunstrom, ranked 72nd in the nation, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. At the top doubles spot, he teamed with FABRIZIO SESTINI to defeat the Mustang tandem of Eric Cohn and Ryan Mauck, 8-6, to help the Horned Frogs capture the doubles point. Gordon is 12-7 overall and owns a career mark of 85-35. TCU is the No. 2 seed in the 2003 C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship beginning on Wednesday in Milwaukee.
