C-USA Women's Tennis Championship - Day One

    Friday's quarterfinals are set for the C-USA Women's Tennis Championship. DePaul, Louisville, Houston, Marquette, USF and Charlotte have all advanced to the next round after claiming wins in Thursday's action. Click here for all the latest results.

    DEPAUL 4, CINCINNATI 2
    No. 4 DePaul advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship, after claiming a 4-2 win over 13th-seeded Cincinnati on Thursday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Blue Demons will now face fifth-seeded Louisville at Seneca Park on Friday at 3 p.m. (EST).

    Cincinnati came out strong early in the match to claim the doubles point. Lyndsey Molony and Hannah Hinton upset DePaul’s No. 1 tandem of Marina Parashkevova and Natalie Matko, 8-2. Cristina Reyes and Mariana Lozano outlasted Brenda Leung and Petra Rehusova, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.

    In singles action, the Blue Demons came back to take the lead with Parashkevova sweeping Reyes, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position and DePaul’s No. 5 singles player Rehusova claiming a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jill Klauk. After helping the Bearcats clinch the doubles point, Hinton nabbed another win, posting a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Natalie Matko at No. 3.

    The Blue Demons clinched the victory after Gergana Ganeva came back in the second set to capture a 7-5, 6-4 win over Cincinnati’s Molony.

    Cincinnati will now compete in the consolation bracket and will face either Marquette or Southern Miss at Seneca Park at 9 a.m.

    Fifth-seeded Louisville defeated No. 11 UAB, 4-1, in the first round of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at Seneca Park. The Cardinals will now face fourth-seeded DePaul on Friday at 3 p.m., while the Blazers fall to the consolation bracket and will take on either Houston or Saint Louis.

    UAB took a 1-0 lead when the Blazer tandem of Annemieke Elsholz and Julie Von Samson claimed a 9-7 win over Kelly Taylor and Natalie Laszkowski at the No. 2 position.

    Louisville fought back, claiming four singles points. Michelle Spiess clinched the victory for the Cardinals, downing UAB’s Femke de Boer at the No. 1 spot.

    Third-seeded Houston cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 14 Saint Louis in the first round of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cougars will next face the winner of the Marquette/Southern Miss match on Friday at Seneca Park (Noon, EST), while the Billikens fall to the consolation bracket where they will take on 11th-seeded UAB on Friday at 9 a.m.

    Houston picked up the doubles point with Diana Martin and Karine Urbin cliching an 8-2 decision over SLU’s Katerina Lozanova and Melissa Cutler at No. 2. Yolandi Yerblanche and Kami Miller followed, defeating Rebecca Steer and Lindsay Winninger, 8-1.

    In singles action, the Cougars nabbed three singles matches in straight sets. Terblanche finished with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over SLU’s Cutler, while Miller swept Winninger, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. Houston’s Urbin downed Rebecca Steer, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the victory.

    Sixth-seeded Marquette defeated Southern Miss, 4-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship at Seneca Park on Thursday. Marquette will now face No. 3 Houston on Friday at noon while No. 12 USM will take on Cincinnati in the consolation round on Friday at 9 a.m. Both matches will be played at Seneca Park.

    The Marquette tandem of Veronica Garcia Briseno and Callan Smith narrowly defeated Nicola Slater and Katharina Sadofsky, while Francina Bonnelly and Eva Trujillo Herrera won at No. 3 against USM’s Olivia Berry and Courtney Ulrich, 8-4.

    After losing the doubles point, Southern Miss fought back claiming the No. 1 singles spot. Slater notched a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Marquette’s Briseno. However, MU claimed the No. 2, 4 and 5 singles positions with Bonnelly sealing the victory with a 7-5, 7-6 decision over Berry at No. 5.

    Eighth-seeded USF swept ninth-seeded Memphis in the first round of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

    The Bulls will now face second-seeded TCU, which earned a first-round bye, at 3 p.m. on Friday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Memphis will take on the winner of the UAB/Saint Louis match on Friday at 6 p.m.

    USF dominated the match early, winning the doubles point. Gabriela Duch and Marie France Lord Andrade downed Memphis’ duo of Viktoria Gruber and Marlene Dirnstofer, 8-4, at the No. 1 doubles spot. The Bulls’ tandem of Fabiana Taverna and Luisa Obando also nabbed an 8-4 decision over Andrea Feichtinger and Yesica Ares, 8-4, at No. 2.

    In singles action, USF’s Duch posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dirnstorfer, while Patricia Kolendo defeated Ares, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. Obando also swept Christina Wieser, 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth spot.

    Seventh-seeded Charlotte swept No. 10 East Carolina, 4-0, in the first round of the C-USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at Seneca Park. The 49ers will now take on No. 1 Tulane at noon on Friday. East Carolina will battle the winner of the Cincinnati/Southern Miss match on Friday at 6 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

    Charlotte cruised to a 1-0 lead, after claiming the doubles point. Ali Piacente and Megan Bullins shut out the Pirates’ team of Sara Boseman and Ashley Perkinson, 8-0, at the No. 3 doubles position. Kathy Robey and Ofra Friedman also nabbed an 8-6 victory over Gillie Bailey and Cristina Meilicke at No. 2.

    In singles action, Piacente claimed another win for the 49ers, after downing Boseman, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot. Charlotte clinched the match when Friedman swept Kirstin Buchanan, 6-3, 6-0.

    Friday’s action will begin at 9 a.m., with the beginning of the consolation matches. UAB faces Saint Louis at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, while Cincinnati takes on Southern Miss at Seneca Park.
