The quarterfinals of the 2004 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship in Memphis, Tenn. are set to get underway. Southern Miss and UAB have both advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round. Host Memphis and East Carolina have also advanced to the next round. The 10th-seeded Golden Eagles shut down eighth-seeded Charlotte 4-1, while the fifth-seeded Blazers claimed the win over No. 11 seed Marquette with a score of 5-0. The sixth-seeded Tigers swept the No. 12 Billikens, while East Carolina topped the Blue Demons, 4-0.
Match #1 – (10) Southern Miss 4, (8) Charlotte 1
Southern Miss quickly earned the doubles point as David Canudus and Dylan Mezey teamed up to take the 8-3 victory in the No. 1 spot, and the third flight team of Chris Rea and Reid Bourgeois claimed an 8-4 win.
In singles action, Rea topped Charlotte’s Dorian Host, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 4 slot and Bourgeois took out 49er Zvi Lantsberg, in the fifth flight, 7-5, 6-4. Jonathan Clark kept the Niners in the running with 6-0, 6-2 victory over USM’s Marc-Oliver Lux. But it was David Canudas of Southern Miss who clinched the victory for the Golden Eagles with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Arturo Aguirre of Charlotte in the No. 1 singles match.
The Golden Eagles will now match up against top-seeded TCU in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Match #2 – (5) UAB 5, (11) Marquette 0
UAB shut out Marquette in a 5-0 sweep. The Blazers claimed the doubles point as the duo of Sanzaruz Zaman and Dino Marcarella cleaned up at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 win. In the third flight of doubles, Kristijan Mitrovski and Ivan Andreev of UAB posted an 8-2 win.
Andre Maier tallied another win for the Blazers as he defeated Marquette’s Eigis Vedrickas in second singles 6-1, 6-2. Mitrovski and Zaman each claimed victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Andreev sealed the Blazers’ win with a 6-1, 6-2 performance over Ricky Servoss at No. 6.

Match #3 – (6) Memphis 4, (12) Saint Louis 0
In the third match of day one, Memphis swept Saint Louis 4-0. Lee Taylor Walker and James Spence contributed to earning the Tigers’ doubles point with an 8-4 victory in the first flight. In the No. 3 spot, Memphis’ Alex Jago and Luke Campbell paired up to claim an 8-1 win over the Billikens.
Walker also earned his squad a point with a 6-3, 6-3 win against the Bills’ Ikaika Jobe in the first flight of singles. Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla also came through with victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots, respectively. Memphis advances to face fourth-seeded USF on Friday at Noon.

Match #4 – (7) East Carolina 4, (9) DePaul 0
East Carolina recorded the third sweep of the day with a 4-0 win over DePaul. The Pirates dominated early, claiming the doubles point. The team of Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose recorded an 8-3 performance in No. 2 doubles, and Felipe Fonseca with Mark Gellard claimed an 8-4 win in the third flight.
In singles action, Baumer defeated George Wang of DePaul, 6-2, 6-0. Fonseca topped Will Wang in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 4 slot, while Rose beat Michael Fessler in two sets as well (6-1, 6-0) in No. 6 singles. The Pirates move on to the quarterfinal round where they will compete against second-seeded Tulane.
