C-USA Men's Tennis Championship - Day Two

    The semifinal pairings for the 2004 C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship in Memphis, Tenn. have been set. In the quarterfinal round on Friday, top-seeded TCU defeated No. 10 Southern Miss, while third-seeded Louisville beat No. 5 UAB. Both squads topped their opponents with scores of 4-0 and will face each other on Saturday at 9 a.m (CST). No. 6 Memphis and second-seeded Tulane will also be advancing to the semifinal round. The Tigers edged No. 4 USF 4-3, and the Green Wave defeated No. 7 East Carolina with a score of 4-0.

    Match #5 – TCU 4, Southern Miss 0

    TCU cruised past Southern Miss, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round on Friday. The Horned Frogs came out strong and handily won the doubles point. Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini teamed up to record the first win in third doubles (8-1) and then the Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu duo clinched the point with a 8-2 victory in No. 1 doubles.

    In the second flight of doubles, Hector Almada defeated Juan Garzon, 6-3, 6-1. Jacopo Tezza cleaned up in the No. 4 spot after pushing past Thomas Funke, 6-1, 6-0. Martin recorded his second win of the day with a victory in No. 6 singles over Dylan Mezey.

    Match #6 – Louisville 4, UAB 0

    Louisville shut out UAB, 4-0, in the quarterfinals at the HPER Courts. Matt Mayer and Jeremy Clark paired up in the first flight of doubles to record an 8-3 win. To clinch the doubles point, Damar Johnson and Jakob Gustafsson tacked on an 8-4 victory.

    In singles action, Clark picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles and Mayer defeated Anton Mavrin in the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-1. Octavian Nicodim posted a 6-2, 6-1 performance over Andre Maier in the second flight to clinch the win.

    Match #7 – (6) Memphis 4, (4) USF 3

    Memphis squeaked by USF to clinch a 4-3 win and a spot in the semifinal round. USF had the edge early on after claiming the doubles point. Uli Kiendl and Karim Benmansour teamed up to claim an 8-4 win in the No. 1 slot and the team of Federico Barton and Andy Maroldt (No. 3 doubles) posted an 8-5 performance against Alex Jago and Luke Campbell.

    The Tigers started off the singles matches with a two point advantage after Benmansour and Matias Sigal dropped out due to injury. This left just four singles contests to be played with the score marked at 2-1 in Memphis’ favor. Barton and Maroldt each gave the Bulls a win after posting scores of 6-4, 6-4, and 6-4, 6-3, in the second and third flights, respectively. But the Tigers’ Lee Taylor Walker kept his squad alive with a 6-4, 6-3, performance in No. 1 singles over Kiendl. Marten Tamla of Memphis battled German Escallon in the No. 4 spot and came out on top (7-6, 6-3) to clinch the Tigers’ ticket to Saturday’s competition. Memphis will face Tulane in the semifinals at Noon.

    Match #8 – (2) Tulane 4, (7) East Carolina 0

    Tulane eased past East Carolina in the quarterfinal round on Friday with a score of 4-0. The Green Wave claimed the doubles point after taking the second and third flights with scores of 8-2 and 8-4, respectively.

    Ted Angelinos topped Darren Mansell in No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-0), while Jacobo Hernandez defeated Mark Gellard in the fifth spot with scores of 6-1, 6-0. Alberto Sottocorno chipped in for the Green Wave, recording a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles. Tulane will face Memphis in the semifinals on Saturday at the HPER Courts at Noon.

    CONSOLATION

    Match #10 (Consolation) – (8) Charlotte 4, (9) DePaul 3

    DePaul fell to Charlotte, 4-3, in the first round of the ninth-place consolation bracket. The 49ers lost the doubles point, but came back to claim four singles matches. In first doubles, Mark Henderson and Sam Davidson of DePaul won, 8-2, and teammates Eric Huffman and George Wang also contributed with an 8-6 victory.

    In the singles competition, Henderson and Wang, won the No. 1 and No. 2 spots with scores of 6-1, 6-3, and 6-0, 4-6, 7-6, respectively. But the Niners recorded wins in the last four flights. Marlo Santoso beat out Davidson (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) in the No. 3 spot to clinch the win. Charlotte will advance to the next round where they will battle Saint Louis for ninth place.

    In the second match of the ninth place consolation round, Saint Louis defeated Marquette, 4-0. The Billikens earned the doubles point as Tom deLarzac and Thomas Kwong beat Marquette’s Troy Delmege and Ian Kawas, 8-4, at No. 2. At No. 3, Lance Vodicka and Taylor Curran posted an 8-6 decision over MU’s Creighton Macy and Ricky Servoss.

    In singles, Vodicka defeated Kawas at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2. Kwong beat Eigis Vedrickas, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Ikaika Jobe clinched the match for the Billikens with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Raj Gill at No. 1 singles. Saint Louis advances to the ninth place final, taking on Charlotte at 9 a.m. Saturday.
