C-USA Women's Tennis Championship - Day Three

    Tulane, the defending C-USA Champs, advanced to its second consecutive women's tennis championship match after defeating Houston, 4-1, in the semifinals. TCU shut out Louisville, 4-0, to earn its third trip to the championship final. In 2003, the Green Wave notched a 4-0 victory over the Horned Frogs. Sunday's final will be held at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, beginning at noon.


    Charlotte 4, Marquette 1
    No. 7 Charlotte claimed a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Marquette in the consolation round of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The 49ers will now face USF on Sunday at Seneca Park (9 a.m.). Marquette finishes the tournament tied for seventh with DePaul.

    Charlotte won the doubles point after the team of Laura Swain and Ashleigh Murray defeated Marquette’s duo of Veronica Garcia Briseno and Callan Smith, 8-2.

    The Golden Eagles rallied after Briseno swept Swain, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. However, Charlotte came back to sweep the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Kathy Robey clinched the 4-1 victory for the 49ers when she outlasted Annabelle Espinosa, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4.

    USF 4, DEPAUL 0
    USF shut out fourth-seeded DePaul, 4-0, in the consolation round of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday at Seneca Park. The Bulls will now face Charlotte on Sunday at 9 a.m., while the Blue Demons conclude the tournament tied for seventh with Marquette.

    USF clinched the doubles point after Marie France Lord Andrade and Gabriela Duch notched an 8-3 decision over DePaul’s Marina Parashkevova and Gergana Ganeva at No. 1. The Blue Demons did not field a third flight doubles team due to injuries.

    In singles action, Fabiana Taverna swept Natalie Matko, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2, while Patricia Kolendo defeated Brenda Leung, 6-0, 6-4. Luisa Obando also nabbed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Stephanie Matko at No. 5.

    TULANE 4, HOUSTON 1
    No. 1 Tulane captured a 4-1 victory over third-seeded Houston in the semifinals of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Green Wave will now advance to their second consecutive C-USA Championship match. Last year, Tulane defeated TCU, 4-0, for the C-USA title.

    The Tulane team of Nancy Kockott and Dorottya Magas cruised to an 8-1 victory over Diana Martin and Karine Urbin at No. 2. Jenny Kuhn and Maria Ivanov clinched the doubles point for the Green Wave after nabbing an 8-6 win over Yolandi Terblanche and Diana Miller.

    The Green Wave continued to dominant in singles play. Playing at No. 1, Jenny Kuhn cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Miranda Foley. Magas swept Terblanche, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot, while Erika Valdes claimed a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Karine Urbin. Houston’s Kami Miller earned the Cougars’ only singles win, after sweeping Ana Saabi, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

    Tulane will now face TCU on Sunday in the championship match at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, beginning at noon. Houston will take on Louisville at 9 a.m.

    SOUTHERN MISS 4, MEMPHIS 2
    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – 12th-seeded Southern Miss finished the 2004 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship in ninth place after defeating ninth-seeded Memphis, 4-2, in the consolation rounds on Saturday at Seneca Park. The Tigers finished its tournament run in 10th place.

    The Golden Eagles nabbed a 1-0 lead after the tandem of Nicola Slater and Katharina Sadofsky outlasted the Tiger team of Viktoria Gruber and Marlene Dirnstorfer, 8-5, at the No. 1. Nikhila Narra and Grace Kammerer also scored a win at No. 2 with an 8-1 decision over Memphis’ duo of Andrea Feichtinger and Yesica Ares.

    In singles action, Memphis rallied back when Feichtinger swept Sadofsky, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 and Christina Wieser posted a 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 victory over Courtney Ulrich at No. 6.

    Southern Miss would bounce back as Slater swept Dirnstorfer, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 and Kammerer came from behind to defeat Ares, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Narra sealed the victory with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 decision over Gruber at the No. 2 spot.

    TCU advances to its third consecutive C-USA Women’sTennis Championship final after defeating fifth-seeded Louisville, 4-0, on Saturday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. A rematch of last year’s final, TCU will face No. 1 seed Tulane on Sunday at noon. The Cardinals will take on No. 3 Houston in the third/fourth place match.

    TCU dominated in doubles, claiming all three matches. The duo of Saber Pierce and Ana Cetnik defeated Michele Spiess and Julia Hierl, 8-2, at No. 1.

    In singles, The Horned Frogs’ Ana Cetnik defeated Julia Hierl, 6-4, 6-1, while Gloriann Lopez claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Christina Gogol. Pierce would then sweep Kelly Taylor, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles to clinch the 4-0 victory for the Horned Frogs.
