Quarterfinal round play at the 2005 C-USA Men's Tennis Championship in Louisville, Ky. is complete. Tulane has moved on to semifinal play following a 4-0 victory over DePaul. The Green Wave will play USF, a 4-1 winner over Memphis. In the opening match of the day, No. 3 seed Louisville defeated UAB, 5-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The Cardinals will face TCU in the semis after the Horned Frogs defeated Southern Miss, 4-0. In the consolation matches, Charlotte downed Saint Louis, 4-0 and East Carolina topped Marquette, 4-1.
(3) Louisville 5, UAB 0 The Cardinals started the match by taking the doubles point. Mark Kennedy and Damar Johnson defeated Sebastian Falk 8-5 and Johannes Spangenberg at No. 3 while Slavko Radman and Jhonny Berrido beat Kristijan Mitrovski and Anton Mavrin 8-1 at No. 2 to clinch the point.
In singles action, Berrido gave Louisville a 2-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Adrian Tollstam at No. 6. Gustafsson defeated Andre Maier 6-1, 6-3 at the three-spot to make it a 3-0 match. Radman beat Mavrin 7-6, 6-1 to clinch the match. Clark closed out the win moments later with a 6-2, 7-6 decision over Filip Kanczula at No. 5 for a final score of 5-0.
(2) TCU 4, Southern Miss 0 Second seeded TCU defeated No. 8 seeded Southern Miss 4-0 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championship.
TCU began the match by taking the doubles point. Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin beat Reid Bourgeois and Christopher Rea 8-1 at No. 2, while Jacopo Tezza and Radu Barbu teamed to defeat David Canudas and Juan Garzon 8-2 at the three spot.
The Horned Frogs picked up wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 5 in singles. Sestini topped Canudas 6-3, 6-1 at the top seed to make the match 2-0. Freitas registered a 7-6, 6-2 win over Bourgeois at No. 5 and Martin clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Lux at No. 2.
TCU will face third-seeded Louisville in a semi-final match Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
(1) Tulane 4, DePaul 0 Top-seeded Tulane defeated No. 7 DePaul 4-0 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Green Wave began the match by taking the doubles point as the team of David Goulet and Jonah Kane-West defeated Gabe Inchauste and George Want 8-3 at the three-seed and the team of Ted Angelinos and Jacobo Hernandez edged DePaul's Eric Huffman and Robert Kortoczo 9-7 at No. 2 to clinch the point.
In singles action, Goulet put the Green Wave ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Kotrozco at No. 2. Alberto Sottocorno topped Jack Komar 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 and Angelinos beat Wang 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to give Tulane the 4-0 win.
(6) USF 4, Memphis 1 Sixth-seeded South Florida upset fourth-seeded Memphis 4-1 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The teams began the match playing doubles outdoors. The Tigers' Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla defeated Andreas Maroldt and Marc Jaeger 8-3 at No. 2. Mark Finnegan and Alex Jago beat Juan Barragan and Dillon Brozyna 8-5 at the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point.
The teams moved inside when inclement weather set in and had to wait out a tornado warning before beginning the singles matches. When singles finally began, Jago tied the match at 1-1 as he defeated Maroldt 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Brozyna topped Scott Felsenthal 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6 to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. Kiendl defeated Bucewicz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the top spot to make it a 3-1 match. Barragan outlasted James Spence 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 at No. 2 to clinch the match.
USF will face top-seeded Tulane in a semifinal match Saturday at noon.
Charlotte 4, Saint Louis 0 (consolation match) Ninth-seeded Charlotte defeated No. 12 seeded Saint Louis 4-0 Friday in the ninth place consolation round of the 2005 Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championship. The match was originally scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at Chickasaw Park, but because of inclement weather, was rescheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the DuPont Racquet Club.
Charlotte’s Roy Sichel defeated Tom de Larzac 6-3, 6-1 at the top to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. Stuart Lynas beat Andrew Balcer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 and Jonathan Clark topped James Wilson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. The match was clinched at the No. 4 seed when Marlo Santoso defeated Chris Welnetz 6-2, 6-4
Charlotte will face the winner of the East Carolina match Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Saint Louis finishes tied for eleventh place.
East Carolina 4, Marquette 1 (consolation match) Tenth-seeded East Carolina defeated No. 11 Marquette 4-1 Friday in the ninth place consolation round of the 2005 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Chickasaw Park, but because of inclement weather was moved indoors at the DuPont Racquet Club. The doubles point was not played.
East Carolina's Felipe Fonseca defeated Ian Kawas 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Paulo Baumer beat Eigis Vedrickas 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Henrique Viana topped Brett Binkley 6-3, 6-4 at the three-spot to increase ECU's lead to 3-0. Marquette's Greg Sirotek defeated Florian Tremmell 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5 to make it a 3-1 contest. East Carolina's Darren Mansell clinched the match, edging Pete Van Lieshout 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) at No. 4.
East Carolina will face Charlotte Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Marquette finishes tied for eleventh place.
The semifinals take place Saturday, April 23 beginning at 9 a.m. A ninth-place consolation round will also be played Friday and Saturday. The championship match is slated for Sunday, April 24 at 11 a.m. All main draw matches will take place at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
