C-USA Women's Tennis Championship Bracket
Results and Recaps
The 2005 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship wrapped up its quarterfinals action at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The four-day event concludes on Sunday, April 24 with the championship match scheduled for noon (CST). Among the teams advancing to semifinals are top-seeded Tulane, No. 3 USF, fourth-seeded Houston and second-seeded TCU. Defending C-USA Champion Tulane, earned its 13th consecutive win of the season following a 4-0 defeat of UAB to advance to semifinal action. The 16th-ranked Green Wave, which currently holds a 21-4 overall record, dominated the doubles as Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuehn, the nation's No. 35 doubles pair, picked up an 8-2 on court two, while Ana Saaibi and Nancy Kockott notched a shutout, 8-0, at third doubles. Heading to singles competition with a 1-0 advantage, Tulane sealed a spot in the semifinals with three singles victories. Maria Ivanov tallied the win at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, over the Blazers' Gulsah Esen while sister Darya used similar scores, 6-1, 6-2, in her victory on court four over Samrin Tanzeem. Smekodub's 6-3, 6-4 straight set win at No. 3 provided the fourth point, and clinched the match for the Wave. USF defeated sixth-seeded Louisville 4-1 today and will advance to face No. 1 seed Tulane in Saturday's semifinals. In a meeting between USF and Tulane earlier this season, the Wave came away with a 5-2 triumph in Tampa. The Bulls jumped to a 1-0 lead against the Cardinals, claiming the doubles point by winning identical 8-3 matches at numbers one and two. USF defaulted at number six singles, but then got straight set wins from Neyssa Etienne, Gabriela Duch and Liz Cruz at numbers one, three and four, respectively. Etienne won 6-2, 6-4, Duch scored a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Cruz came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Down 3-2 against DePaul and facing elimination from the C-USA Women's Tennis Tournament, the No. 74 Houston tennis team battled back to claim the match at 4-3 with junior Yolandi Terblanche's straight-set victory at the No. 4 spot. The win propels the Cougars into the C-USA semifinals for the second consecutive season where they will face No. 17 TCU. Tournament host TCU cruised to a 5-0 victory over East Carolina to improve its overall record to 19-3 this season and advance to the semis of the tourney. The Frogs opened the match by sweeping the doubles point for the sixth time this season. In singles, TCU made short work of the Pirates as they won love and love at the top two spots in the line-up. No. 16 Tweedie-Yates won her 17th consecutive match when she defeated ECU's Mariea Gol at the one line to improve to 31-4. At two, No. 55 Helena Besovic cruised to her 31st win as she topped Kirstin Buchanan, 6-0, 6-0.
The semifinals will take place Saturday, April 23 beginning at noon, while a consolation round will also be played on Saturday. The championship match is slated for Sunday, April 24 at noon. All main draw matches will take place at the Bayard H. Freeman Tennis Center. All times are Central.
