For the second consecutive year, two women’s tennis teams have advanced to the NCAA Championship. No. 16 Tulane earned C-USA’s automatic bid by winning the league championship and will host No. 72 Southeastern Louisiana (19-6). No. 18 TCU qualified for the NCAA’s for the second year in a row under third-year head coach David Borelli and the eighth time in school history.
The Horned Frogs will also travel to New Orleans to face No. 44 LSU (12-11) on Friday, May 13 in the Round of 64 with the potential to have a C-USA Championship rematch in the second round. TCU’s first round match time has yet to be determined.
First- and second-round competition will be conducted May 13-14 with the winner of each site advancing to the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia. The team championship will be held May 19-22.
This season, Tulane posted a 23-5 mark, while claiming its third consecutive C-USA Championship title and fourth overall under sixth-year head coach David Shumacher. Schumacher, who was recognized as the Conference USA Coach of the Decade earlier this spring, earned his fourth Conference USA Coach of the Year honor, his third in as many seasons. His Green Wave team started the season ranked No. 9, marking its highest national ranking in school history, is currently ranked 16th in the nation with a record of 23-5 on the year. The Tulane Green Wave placed five players on the All-Conference USA team, including two first-team selections of senior Maria Ivanov and junior Jenny Kuehn.
TCU, the Conference USA runner-up, enters the NCAA Championships with a 20-4 record on the year. This season’s appearance is the Frogs' second straight and their eighth overall in the history of the program. TCU has three players on its squad that were first team all-conference selections in Helena Besovic, Ana Cetnik and Story Tweedie-Yates. Tweedie-Yates was also named the C-USA Player of the Year.
The teams will play a single-elimination tournament at 16 first- and second-round sites (four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion. The matches shall be regulation dual matches with three (3) eight-game, pro-set doubles played for one team point, followed by six (6) singles matches, each valued at one team point, played best of three sets. Regular scoring will be used and a 12-point tiebreaker will be played at eight games all in doubles and at six games all in singles.
Tomorrow, individuals will be chosen for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships by 5 p.m. CDT. The brackets will be announced on the NCAA's Web site.
