USF Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Second Round

College Station, Texas - For the third straight year the University of South Florida men’s tennis team advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Bulls beat 20th ranked Georgia 4-0, Friday afternoon in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M.

The Bulls started the day by taking the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. The combination of USF’s Andres Maroldt and Nadim Naser was too strong for Georgia’s Strahinja Bobusic and Raian Luchici beating them 8-1. Georgia quickly answered by winning at No. 1 singles 8-4. The doubles point came down to the match at No. 2 doubles where the duo of Uli Kiendl and Juan Barragan beat Will Glenn and Stephan Timu, 8-5, giving USF the 1-0 lead.

In singles action Uli Kiendl upset Bo Hodge ranked 4th in the nation. Kiendl came out firing taking the first set 6-2 and then had to go to a tie breaker in the second set to win the match, beating Hodge 6-2, 7-6(4) at No. 1 singles. With a 2-0 lead Renato Silveria looked to extend the lead for the Bulls at No. 3 against Stephan Timu. Silveria jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set but then saw his lead slip away as Timu battled back. Silveria won the first set in a tie breaker 7-6(4) and then coasted through the second set winning 6-3.

With the Bulls one singles win away from the second round Paco Antelo defeated Georgia’s Nicolas Boeker, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to move the Bulls into the next round.

USF(16-8) will now play host school Texas A&M, tomorrow Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.CST.
