Conference USA's NCAA Men's Tennis First Round Results

SOUTH FLORIDA 4, MIAMI (FLA.) 1
The University of South Florida men's tennis team advanced into the second match of the NCAA Regionals by beating the University of Miami 4-1, Saturday Morning.

The Bulls' jumped out to the early advantage by taking the doubles point. "I thought doubles played really well, Dan and Martin played well together and then Jorge and Nadim played well," commented USF head coach Don Barr after the victory. "I think it's going to be a tight math tomorrow, we have to be ready to play. Today only four cylinders were working we need all six to be working tomorrow," stated Barr. USF picked up singles win's from Paco Antelo at No. 2 singles, Uli Kiendl at No. 4 and Jorge Escallon at No. 6.

This marks the second time this season that the Bulls' have beaten the Canes', the first coming on March 6 down in Coral Cables where the Bulls' came out on top 4-3. Saturday's victory had a litte bit more meaning to it, the Bulls' will now face the winner of the Florida/Georgia State Sunday afternoon at noon.

If the Bulls' come out on top on Sunday they will do something no other USF men's tennis team has done and that is reach the Sweet-16.

USF hasn't played Georgia State this year but they have played the Gators. The Gators beat the Bulls' 4-3 down in Tampa early this season.

WASHINGTON 4, TULANE 2
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Tulane University dropped a hard-fought battle with Washington in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a 4-2 score on Saturday morning at Stanford University's Taube Tennis Center.

The Huskies appeared to be on their way to an easy win as they picked up the first three points of the match.

Washington first clinched the doubles point thanks to an 8-5 victory from Chrostoph Palmanshofer (St. Georgen, Austria) and Peter Scharler (Salzburg, Austria) at No. 3.

Washington then picked up quick singles victories from Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, CA) at No. 5 and Matt Hanlin (Birmingham, England) at No. 1 to move one point away from the win.

Tulane, however, came roaring back and cut the deficit on 3-2 on victories from Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) at No. 4 and Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) at No. 3. The Green Wave appeared they might complete the comeback, as it led 5-2 in the third set at No. 6 and was tied at 4-4 in the third set at No. 2.

Washington, however, did not lose another game. At No. 2, Huskies' freshman Alex Vlaksi broke serve to take a 5-4 lead and then held serve to clinch the match.

"We were right there today, and put ourselves in a position to win," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said. "Washington is a good team, and they were just better than we were today."

Tulane sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) will be in action at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships beginning May 22 in Texas. The pair will team up in the Doubles Championship, while Kogan will compete in the Singles Championship. Romero is also likely to see action in the Singles Championship as he is the No. 1 alternate for the event, which features 64 players.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- LSU defeated TCU, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

"I thought the doubles point was a good competitive point," TCU coach Joey Rive said. "We've been struggling with it a bit lately. We just seem to have been short a couple of guys in doubles. It's been a tough year for us in doubles. We have a lot of young guys. We just brought in our main core of guys in January. And they've done a good job of forming chemistry in a short amount of time Our hats go off to LSU."
