Tulane Men's Tennis Ousted By Stanford in NCAA Round of 16

ATHENS, Ga. - Tulane's 11-match winning streak came to an end on Saturday evening as fourth-ranked Stanford won a 4-0 decision from the Green Wave in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia's McWhorter Courts.

Tulane, which holds the No. 15 ranking in the nation, closes its 2003 season with a 21-6 record, establishing a school record for victories. Stanford improves to 24-3.

The Green Wave battled to the end in doubles, forcing two matches to go to tiebreaker, but the powerful Cardinal escaped with the point with a 7-2 tiebreaker win over the Wave's Dmitriy Koch and Goran Vasiljevic at No. 2 doubles. Tulane's fifth-ranked tandem of Michael Kogan and Victor Romero held a 6-5 tiebreaker edge at No. 1 doubles against the fourth-ranked team in the country, but the match was halted when Stanford clinched at No. 2. Mattias Westerberg and Jorge Lievano lost, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Stanford earned points at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to wrap up the victory.

At No. 6 Carter Morris upended Tulane's Hannu Piiroinen, 6-3, 6-2 for a 2-0 Cardinal lead. No. 77 Scott Lipsky made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over the Wave's Victor Romero, who is ranked No. 92 in the country. The clincher came at No. 4 singles as Mattias Westerberg could not stop 63rd-ranked Sam Warburg, falling, 6-2, 6-4.

Tulane's Michael Kogan and Jorge Lievano had each forced third sets in their singles matches, but the top-to-bottom strength of Stanford was too much for the Wave to overcome.

The Green Wave was making its first trip to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Team Championships.

Kogan and Romero will remain in Athens for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships which begin on Monday. The pair will team up in doubles, while Kogan will look for the singles title.
