Kogan and Romero Advance to NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals

ATHENS, Ga. - Tulane University's nationally-ranked doubles duo of Michael Kogan and Victor Romero posted their 17th straight doubles victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Friday afternoon at the University of Georgia.

Kogan and Romero, ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated the Marcin Matkowski and Rodrigo Grilli from UCLA in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Green Wave pair will meet the No. 1 seeded team in the nation from Rice University on Saturday at noon. The Baylor team consists of the brother-combo of Richard and William Barker, who have won 34 straight matches and own a perfect 25-0 record this spring.

In singles action, Michael Kogan suffered a tough loss to a hometown hero and was eliminated from the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Friday.

Kogan, ranked No. 11 in the nation, was stopped in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7, by Bo Hodge, the No. 1 singles player for the host school, Georgia Bulldogs. Hodge holds the No. 4 ranking in the nation and the fourth seed in the tournament. He snaps Kogan's 14th-match winning streak, however, the Wave junior will still earn All-American honors in singles play.

Kogan also earned All-America honors in singles and doubles as a freshman in 2001.

Tulane, which holds the No. 15 ranking in the nation as a team, closed its 2003 season with a 21-6 record, establishing a school record for victories.
