Tulane University senior Michael Kogan advanced to the round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Thursday morning at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
Kogan, ranked No. 11 in the country, defeated No. 49 Antonio Ruiz of Texas, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. He will take on No. 21 Pedro Rico of Pepperdine Friday.
The Green Wave senior, who is the four-time Player of the Year in Conference USA, is a 9-16 seed in the singles tournament, which means he has already earned All-America recognition, the third time in his career that he has been a singles All-American. He has earned that distinction twice in doubles.
Kogan and freshman teammate David Goulet, ranked 12th in the nation, lost to the eighth-ranked tandem of KC Corkery and Sam Warburg from Stanford, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the doubles action Thursday.
