HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Marquette University bounced back after losing the point in doubles to take a 4-1 victory over Saint Louis in the 2000 BellSouth Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship Friday morning at Tatum park to finish ninth. SLU finished 10th.
Top seeded UAB defeated Memphis 4-0 to advance to the semifinals Saturday. The Blazers will meet no. 5 seed DePaul who upset no. 4 seed South Florida 4-1. UAB won the doubles point with wins at the no. 2 and no. 3 doubles positions. The top ranked player in the tournament, no. 14th ranked Martin Woisetschlager, clinched the deciding match in straight sets but had to play a tie-breaker in the first set, 7-6 (7-3) before defeating Richard Magney in the second set, 6-4. Memphis no. 1 doubles' team upset the 54th ranked team of Tom Dalby and Alexander Jung, 8-3.
DePaul took the doubles point and then won three of the four singles to upset South Florida. USF's Fabio Tintori ranked no. 64 and DPU's John Cheregi ranked no. 99 did not finish their match. The Blue Demon's John Michael no. 5 singles clinched the match for DePaul in a thrilling 6-2, 6-4 win over Jit Shah of South Florida.
Third seed Louisville won two of the three doubles and three of the four singles completed to advance to the semifinals with a 4-1 win over host Southern Miss. USM's Miikka Kangas was the only player to post a victory in the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over UofL's Tvrtko Kujundzic.
Tulane won the doubles' point and the three singles to defeat UNC Charlotte 4-0 to advance to the semifinals to meet Louisville. Tulane's Dennis Lundberg was serving for the match when his fellow teammate, Chris Ortner playing no. 4 singles, finished first to clinch the match for the Green Wave.
UAB will meet DePaul in one semifinal at noon while Tulane will play Louisville at 3 p.m. in the other semifinal. Memphis will face South Florida in one consolation match at noon while Southern Miss will face UNC Charlotte in the other consolation match to determine fifth through eight places.
