UAB Advances to Championship Match, Louisville Upsets Tulane
HATTIESBURG, Miss UAB continued its run through the 2000 BellSouth Mobility Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 win over DePaul to advance to the championship match against Louisville, who upset Tulane, 4-2.
In the consolation bracket, Memphis and South Florida played perhaps the most exciting match of the tournament with the Tigers pulling out a 4-3 victory. The match went the distance with the no. 1 singles being the deciding factor. Richard Magney of Memphis defeated Fabio Tintori in three sets, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4 to clinch the win. Memphis won the doubles point but USF bounced back and took three singles' matches at the no. 2, no. 3 and no. 5 positions.
Louisville won at no. 1 and no. 2 doubles to set the tone for the battle to face UAB in the championship match. The Green Wave's top player, Dennis Lundberg, won his match in straight sets over Tvrtko Kujundzic. U of L took wins at the no. 5 and no. 6 singles. No. 2 singles player Mikko Viljanen of Tulane fought off four match points against Joachim Lien of Louisville before losing in the third set, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to give the Cardinals a 4-2 victory.
In the second consolation match, Southern Miss defeated UNC Charlotte 4-2. The Golden Eagles won the no. 1 and no. 2 doubles to earn the first point of the match. UNCC took a 2-1 lead in the match with wins at no. 2 singles and no. 4 singles before the Golden Eagles fought back and took wins at no. 1, no. 3 and no. 6 singles for the match victory.
Play will resume Sunday with matches beginning at 9 a.m., UNCC and USF will play for seventh place at Tatum Park followed by Southern Miss and Memphis at noon for the fifth place. Tulane and DePaul will battle for third place at 9 a.m., at the Racquet Club followed by the championship match between UAB and Louisville at noon.
