Memphis, UNC Charlotte Advance to Quarterfinals
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Eight-seeded Memphis
bounced back after losing the doubles' point to take a
4-2 victory over no. 9 seeded Marquette in the first
match of the day at the 2000 BellSouth Mobility
Conference USA Tennis Championship. Memphis advances
to the quarterfinals to play top seeded UAB Friday at
noon at the Racquet Club. Memphis' Jack Hu clinched
the match for the Tigers with a 7-5, 7-5 win at no. 5
singles over Marquette's Bill Verban.
In the 3 p.m. match, no. 7 seeded UNC Charlotte made
it a clean sweep of no. 10 seeded Saintl Louis, 5-0,
to advance to the quarterfinals against no. 2 seed
Tulane Friday at 3 p.m. at Tatum Park. The 49ers won
both doubles to win the point and won at no. 1, no 4,
no. 5 and no. 6 singles. UNCC's Jonsson Ola won at
no. 1 singles to clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-0
victory over SLU's Bill Tanurchis.
Marquette and Saint Louis will play Friday morning at
9 a.m. at Tatum Park to determine the ninth place
team. No. 4 seeded South Florida will play no. 5
seeded DePaul at noon at Tatum Park while no. 6 seeded
Southern Miss will take on no. 3 seeded Louisville at
3 p.m. at the Racquet Club.
