South Florida Takes C-USA Women's Tennis Crown

Tampa - Tournament host South Florida claimed the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship last weekend as well as the automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship by virtue of winning four of six singles matches and one doubles match in defeating UAB, 5-2, for the C-USA women's title.

USF, the 1997 C-USA tournament champion, was this year's No. 2 seed and defeated Tulane, 5-2 and Southern Miss, 5-1, en route to their fourth finals appearance in the five years of C-USA competition. TINA HARRISON, NATALIE SCHWATZ, JACQUELINE SPICIJARIC, and ILDIKO ZUBOR each won their singles matches, with the tandem of KATHRINE TESSIER AND TINA HARRISON teaming up to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.

In the consolation bracket, Tulane won the third-place match over Marquette, 5-2, and DePaul defeated Memphis, 5-4, to claim fifth place. In the seventh-place match, Houston won 5-4 over Southern Miss while Louisville defeated Cincinnati, 5-3 for ninth place. UNC Charlotte recorded a 5-4 win over Saint Louis to claim 11th place.
