Louisville Upsets UAB to take Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Louisville upset top-seeded UAB, 4-3, to claim the 2000 BellSouth Mobility Conference USA Men's Tennis Champion at the Racquet Club. The match went the distance after the teams were tied 3-3 and came down to the outcome of the No. 6 singles. In the final singles' match of the championship after winning the first set 6-3, UAB's Paul Shovlin began to show signs of exhaustion. With his legs cramping on nearly every point, Shovlin lost the final two sets to U of L's Brent McCombe 6-4, 6-1.
In other matches, Tulane defeated DePaul 4-0 to finish third in the tournament and DePaul finished fourth. Southern Miss took fifth place with a 4-2 win over Memphis and South Florida defeated UNC Charlotte 4-2 for seventh place.
