Two Charlotte Men's Tennis Players Earn ITA Academic Awards

CHARLOTTE - Charlotte rising senior men's tennis players Ola Jonsson and Jonathan McGovern have both been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes. Jonsson carries a 3.95 GPA in business, while McGovern has a 3.54 GPA in sociology.
Jonsson was named first team All-Conference USA this past season. He became the first Charlotte tennis player to be named first team All-Conference USA. This marked the third straight season in which he has earned All-Conference USA honors. The past two seasons, he was named third team All-Conference USA. This season, he recorded 21 singles wins this as Charlotte's number one singles player. He was also part of a doubles team that won 11 matches in a row to end the season. He helped Charlotte finish the season nationally ranked for the first time in school history.
Jonsson was named Conference USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis this past year. This past spring, he was named Verizon Academic First Team At-Large Spring All-District. He also has been a Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal winner three times. He also was the Hugh McEniry Academic Award in 1999-00 season which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA.
McGovern was an integral part of Charlotte's team this past season particularly in doubles. He has won over 39 doubles matches in his career at Charlotte. He was part of Charlotte's number three doubles team who won seven of their final 10 matches. He also recorded Charlotte's only win in their Conference USA Tournament match last spring against eventual tournament champion Tulane in the semifinals, when he defeated Derya Rose at number five singles.
