Jurlina, Leppanen and Asumnu Leads Tulane at Louisiana Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. - Junior Gloria Asumnu and seniors Helmi Leppanen and Jelena Jurlina all posted NCAA Regional Qualifying marks to lead the Tulane women's outdoor track team at the 21st annual Louisiana Classic on Saturday at UL-Lafayette's Cajun Track. Jurlina registered NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in both the javelin and the disucs, events in which she had already qualified. Asumnu recorded her third NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of the season with a time of 23.62 in the 200-meter dash, who season-best time in that event. Leppanen, meanwhile, qualified for NCAA Regionals for the third straight season, posting a distance of 47 feet, four and a half inches in the shot put. Freshman Whitney Hampton won the 800-meter run at an unofficial time of 2:15, while classmate vanessa Kienast took second place with a time of 2:18. However, due to timing system problems, official times are not available. Asumnu also finished third in the 400-meter dash with a personal-record time of 56.00 seconds while Leppanen added a sixth-place effort in the javelin. Freshman Valencia Wilson added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 24.07 and a sixth-place effort in the 400 at 56.39. Sophomore Aubrey Phillips was fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:01. Tulane returns to action this weekend at the LSU Tiger Relays in Baton Rouge.
