March 27, 2006
OXFORD, Miss. - The Tulane women's outdoor track and field team had another strong performance on Saturday, posting eight personal records, including two relays, at the Ole Miss Dual Meet. Junior Gloria Asumnu recorded her second NCAA Regional Qualifying time in the 100-meter dash. In addition, Green Wave senior throwers Jelena Jurlina and Helmi Leppanen competed at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge. Jurlina notched regional-qualifying marks in both the discus and the javelin, while Leppanen qualified for the second-time this year in the shot put. Jurlina won both of her events at the meet, including registering a season-best throw of 163 feet, 10 inches in the discus. Leppanen placed second in the shot. In Mississippi, Asumnu's time of 11.65 seconds in the 100 earned her first-place honors. Tulane's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams were also exceptional at the meet. Asumnu was joined by the freshmen trio of Shaina Pelham, vanessa Kienast and Valencia Wilson to post a time of 3:45.94 to win the 4x400 event. Freshman Whitney Hampton was clocked at a personal-best 4:50.09 in the 1500-meter run to earn fourth place while Wilson was third in the 200-meter dash at 24.39. Freshman Arianne Larimer earned second-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 13:44.01.
Other personal records were turned in by Cecelia Clark (5000 meters), Brianne Darragh (Shot Put), Jill Shriver (5000 meters) and Taneekwa Ross (100 meters).
