Asumnu Shatters Two School Records at Ole Miss Invitational
April 8, 2006
OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Gloria Asumnu had one of the most impressive performances of her Tulane career as she led the Green Wave with a pair of record-setting performances at the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday. Both of her times are tops in Conference USA this season. The junior from Houston shattered her own school record in the 100-meter dash and also established a new school record in the 200. Asumnu's time of 11.38 seconds won the 100 meters at Ole Miss and was 0.12 seconds better than her previous best time of 11.50 seconds, recorded last year at Conference USA Championships. In the 200-meter dash, Asumnu posted a time of 23.40 seconds, improving on her previous best 200-time of 23.56 seconds and erasing the previous Tulane record of 23.55 seconds recorded by Asha James on May 11, 2002. Other solid performances for the Green Wave were turned in by sophomore Shanon Beelendorf, who recorded a time of 58.44 seconds in the 400-meter dash and freshman Whitney Hampton, who ran 2:16.99 in the 800. Freshman Valencia Wilson ran 24.98 in the 200-meter dash to finish in eighth place. Senior Marilyn Sauls and junior Christina Tegbe both made the debuts in the jumps at the meet. Sauls placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, one-half inch, while Tegbe was eighth in the triple jump at 38 feet, two inches.
